Pre-Kindergarten Registration
The Texas Legislature determines eligibility requirements for free, public prekindergarten in Texas. When the Texas Legislature established the prekindergarten program the intent was, and still is, to provide early learning experiences to students who are most at risk for school failure. Therefore the eligibility is limited. The Legislature believed that a high quality prekindergarten program could mitigate the impact of the at-risk characteristics, thereby assisting these students to become school ready when they enter kindergarten. §29.153 of the Texas Education Code list qualifications of children for Prekindergarten programs.
Eligibility/Tuition:
Any four-year-old child that resides within Columbus ISD may attend Pre-Kindergarten. The District does not charge tuition for those children who meet one of the eligibility criteria established by the Texas Education Agency:
- Limited Proficiency in English
- Qualify for free or reduced-price lunch
- Homeless
- Parent on active duty, killed, or injured while on military active duty
- Foster Care
For those Prekindergarten students who are not eligible in one or more of the categories described above, there is a tuition charge. The tuition is $2,700.00 annually or $300.00 per month payable for nine months. (September 1st - May 1st)
Staff:
Each class will be staffed with a certified teacher with access to a paraprofessional. Additional staff are available to work with students with special needs.
Enrollment:
Enrollment is for the entire year and begins on the first day of school. Once enrolled, state compulsory attendance rules apply.
Required Documents for Registration:
- Government Issued Photo ID (of person enrolling child)
- Child’s Certified Birth Certificate (official birth certificate) or Passport
- Child’s Social Security Card (not just the number)
- Proof of Residency (electric/cable/water bill or voter registration card showing current address.)
- Current Immunization Records
