Curriculum and Assessment

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are the core curriculum components for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5.
Core Curriculum:

Grades PK - 2:   Self contained classrooms

Grades 3 - 4:  Teams of 2 teachers - Language Arts/Social Studies and Math/Science

Grade 5:  Departmentalized teachers - Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies

Support Curriculum:

Physical Education / Music: Students in grades K - 4 will attend Physical Education and Music each week for 50 minute sessions taught by certified teachers.

Physical Education / Technology: Students in grade 5 will attend Physical Education and Technology each week for 50 minute sessions.

Art and Technology: All students will receive instruction in art and technology each six weeks.

Reading Curriculum / Support:

  • Neuhaus - Specialized reading instruction utilized throughout the campus  (Pre-K- 5th grade)
  • ARI Lab - Specialized reading instruction for students in grades 1 - 5. Placement in the program is based on test scores and teacher recommendation. Computerized program in conjunction with individual and small group instruction with a Reading Coach.  A pull-out program will be  a component for Tier III intervention.
  • Dyslexia - Specialized reading instruction for dyslexic students in Neuhaus Reading Program. Students may be referred for dyslexia screening by campus personnel.
  •  Earobics - Computer software designed to diagnose and remediate reading instruction.

Math Curriculum / Support:

  • Sharon Wells Math - specialized math instruction for students in K-5.

  • Saxon Math - a spiral curriculum for math utilized in all math classrooms in K-5.

  • TMDS, Accelerated Math, and SLEEK - software utilized for math remediation and enrichment.

Writing Curriculum:

  • Writing Lab - intensive writing instruction in Grade 4 for preparation for TAKS writing test.
  • Six Trait Writing - writing curriculum and format utilized in K-5.

Gifted / Talented Curriculum:

Students identified using the District's identification guidelines attend gifted talented sessions scheduled each week. The sessions are held at times as determined by campus personnel to meet the needs of the particular grade levels.

Talent pool students in grades K-2 are served primarily by homeroom teachers. Additional instruction and support are available with the gifted talented teacher throughout the year.

Additional students in grades 3-5 are selected to participate in the Challenge program. Placement is based on academic performance during the previous year and test scores. Students in this program will work on a variety of projects and activities to enrich their academic experience at Columbus Elementary School.

Special Education Curriculum:

Students are served in a variety of ways as determined by the Admission Review Dismissal Committee (ARD). Students may receive modifications of the basic curriculum (TEKS - Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) and assistance in the classroom setting. They may also attend Resource classes in specific subject areas as determined by the ARD committee.

English As A Second Language (ESL Program):

Students with limited English proficiency are eligible for the ESL program as determined by the Limited Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC).

Testing and Assessment at Columbus Elementary School include the following tests. Testing dates vary from year to year and can be found in our Calendar information.

Texas Primary Reading Inventory - K, 1st and 2nd grades
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills - K, 1st and 2nd grades
TAKS Writing - 4th grade
TAKS Math - 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades
TAKS Reading - 3rd, 4th and 5th grades
TAKS Science - 5th graders
